Patch or replace

Patch or replace?

Small holes and surface damage get patched: filled, smoothed, and prepared for paint. For larger holes, we cut out the damaged area and install a new piece with backing behind it. Water-damaged drywall that has softened or broken down gets replaced once the leak is fixed.

More than a patch

When it's more than drywall

A lot of drywall work comes after something else. A leak, a remodel, new wiring, a plumbing fix.

Mau & Co is a general contractor. Along with drywall, we also do framing and remodels.

Where we work

Where we work

We work along the Central Coast, including San Luis Obispo County and Santa Barbara County.

Process

How a drywall job goes

  1. 01Site visit. We come out, look at the wall or the room, and talk through what you want done.
  2. 02Scope. We go over what the job involves, whether that's a patch or new board.
  3. 03Hang or patch. New board goes up, or the damaged section gets cut out and replaced.
  4. 04Tape, mud, and texture. Seams taped, mud applied and sanded, and texture applied.

FAQ

Common drywall questions

Do you do texture matching?
Yes. Texture matching is part of our repair work. We work with orange peel, knockdown, smooth, and older textures.
Do you take small repairs, or only big jobs?
Both. We take small repairs, like a single hole or a cracked ceiling, and larger installation work.
Does water-damaged drywall always need to be replaced?
Not always. It depends on how wet the drywall got, how long it stayed wet, and whether it has softened or broken down. Drywall that has lost its strength usually needs to be replaced. The leak needs to be fixed before the repair.
Can you close up a wall after a plumber or electrician opens it?
Yes. When other trades cut into a wall or ceiling to get at pipes or wiring, we patch the opening, then tape, mud, and texture it.
Should I paint the whole wall after a drywall repair?
Not always. A small repair can sometimes be touched up with matching paint. Existing paint fades and changes over time, so a spot repair can still show. Painting the whole wall or ceiling often gives a more even finish.
